Semester 16 Chapter XIII: Figure It Out

Hello world, it’s that time again. Last week was fucking great, especially the weekend. Now, I’m not much of a sports fan. I mean, I do exercise like crazy but I don’t really watch any of it on TV and I don’t really know names of athletes. When I used to travel a bit more, people were throwing names of famous Czech sportspeople at me (after figuring out where I’m from) and I usually kept silent and felt slightly awkward. Now, nothing has really change about that. It’s not that I hate it, it’s more like all of it is pretty fucking low on my list of priorities. I’d rather do like 1000 things before sitting on a fucking couch watching a game of whatever. With that said tho… I did watch the finale of the world ice hockey championship simply because at that point it felt like a national duty. Hadn’t done shit like that in ages but I did enjoy it, it was a good game and it’s super funny seeing how big this thing is in our country. When I went walk the dog after the game, streets were full of enthusiastic people waving flags… It’s all a bit beyond me, but I try to give credits to things that somehow connect people. And this is definitely one of them.

What else… Over the week I didn’t do much. Wednesday evening, I met up with my sis and her gf for couple of drinks which was pleasant. Thursday later in the evening, I hopped on a bus to Prague and Friday morning, me and my friend were on our way to the Yart tattoo shop. This shop is ran by one of the most prolific tattoo artist in the world right now (yes, he happens to be Czech and no, it’s not an exaggeration). Since we all kinda know each other and since my friend is a good friend of him, we did our tattoo session over there. We were covering fingers on my right hand so shit gets symmetrical. Finally. Now, I don’t know how many of you have had your fingers tatted but that place is a motherfucker. Pure pain. Especially the part close to your nails. It gives you an opportunity to enter some new dimensions of spirituality. I mean, I had done it before but this was a proper reminder. We managed tho. It took forever but it’s there and my hands finally look the way they’re supposed to. Since the shop sells some pretty great merch, I copped myself a sweatshirt while at it, we had some good talks and it generally felt great kicking it in a studio that felt this high-level and professional. Nothing sketchy about anything over there.

We left sometime in the evening, walked around the river and eventually took a boat to the other side. It’s part of the public transport system in Prague and it’s all just beautiful. Not sure, where I’m gonna end up after summer (I’m sure it’s not gonna be Brno, tho) but Prague is definitely still on the list. That place is gorgeous (minus winters). We spent a lot of time outside, got some drinks (non-alcoholic, still), got some dinner and talked some more later on at my friend’s with his partner joining us.

I started Saturday with a walk around the city (I’m telling you, Prague is really something else) and some exercise (which was heavily limited due to the fact, that my right hand was barely operational and swollen as fuck). In the afternoon, we grabbed bikes and went on our regular route to Stromovka. The absence of people in the street was confusing as hell. Saturday afternoon, beautiful weather, where the fuck is everybody. We eventually realized that the Czech team was playing semifinals with Sweden. Czechs take that shit really seriously. Apparently, this championship has broken all kinds of records in terms of attendance and viewership. It was cool tho. Stromovka is one of the best parks in town, we grabbed some coffee in Letná, hanged around the Charles Bridge and wrapped the whole thing up at the apartment with some dinner.

Sunday morning, we were on our way back to Brno and in the afternoon, we went to the Vitamin Market. I went a year ago as well. It’s an event providing a platform for local designers (fashion, jewelry, etc.), book publishers and of course some coffee shops and food stalls. It took place close to the city center in a renovated industrial space but there was a lot of grass around and since the sky was clear once again, it was all super pleasant. I met some people I know, the energy was right, everything was enjoyable. Oh, and very close to that event, there was a pretty large group of women on these little trampolines with handles bouncing their asses to some techno. The were like 3 instructors in from of them, the music was blasting and they were jumping all around and sweating. I had no idea that something like that existed but apparently, it is a thing and people actually do that. Felt like an adult version of raving. The way we do raves is different. Friday night, dark space, you get fucked and then you leave the place looking like a zombie having to put yourself together for some time after. These people were drinking protein shakes, eating fruit, absorbing sun a I’m fucking positive they slept like babies later on. I’m obviously not ready to do anything even remotely close that anytime soon but I’m happy I learned something new.

And yeah, in the evening, after some dinner, we actually watched the match. I know the guy for ages but we had never watched any kind of sport event together. So that was a first time. What a way to conclude the weekend. Was feeling really great by the time crashed into the bed. So yeah, hope you guys are doing great and everything is going just the way you want it. And if your team was at the championship too and you didn’t win, suck it. Hehe. Sending love everybody out there. One!

Semester 16 Chapter XII: Freeze The Time

Two years ago, back when I still used to call Tenerife home, I started this little thing of writing some lyrics around my birthday. This year is no different so as my old ass is approaching 37, here’sthis year’s TRACK. It’s a calm Sunday afternoon, just woke up from my little afternoon nap, got the new Chief Keef playing, let’s do this thing.

This week has been pretty calm. On Wednesday, I went to my new sauna place. I’m so happy I took up this habit. I can literally feel the benefits both on my soul and my body. After a really long time, I also got myself some vegan protein. My friend pointed out that since I fucking overdo physical exercise, I’m probably burning most of the muscle I build. Not sure if that’s factual but providing myself with a shake after longer runs doesn’t seem like the worst idea. It’s kinda crazy how has the whole thing developed. When I went vegan about 10 years back, there wasn’t really much. Now you go to your regular supermarket and you got a whole fucking collection of mock meat, cheese, tempeh, yogurts, plant based milk, ice cream… You got dozens of vegan proteins on the market, too… It’s a completely different game. Based on a friend’s recommendation, I picked this MyVegan chocolate blend pack and it’s super tasty. So yeah, that’s new.

My friend from Canada is in town once again and I got a chance to reunite with her and another of our friend Friday evening. We hopped couple of bars, had some good laughs, went through everything important happening in our lives… Shit felt good. Our Japanese adventure is going to be for the books, that’s for sure. On Saturday, I updated my standard routine by another swimming pool session. I feel I’ve been pushing it lately and it does feel good. Feeling good and healthy. One thing to be grateful for. In the evening I met up with one of my bros who came for a quick visit. A whole night of some deep personal and philosophical conversations. And talking some ignorant shit, too. Plus we there was a museum night in the city. That’s an event when they open all the public museums to public free of charge all the way up until midnight. We checked some while strolling around the center. It’s cool that they do that, there were lotta people all over, it felt like a real city.

I’ve already done both my workout and my run today and I also caught up with some of my people. These 12km runs have become pretty much a standard at this point and I do feel it’s getting easier and easier. Gotta plan a longer run sometime soon. I hope y’all good, safe and everything is going just the way you want it to. Shout out to my readers and sending some love to everybody out there. One!

Semester 16 Chapter XI: Fuck A Response From Drake

Okay, I’m gonna start with some rap once more. The dust is settling on this whole Kendrick/Drake situation and the fact Drake got washed has become crystal clear. Kendrick did it better, timed it better, released better songs and rapped circles around him. Honestly, I don’t understand how anyone with any knowledge of the genre can state otherwise (and I do consider Drake a highly skilled artist). Plus Drake has kinda been a culture vulture for these past couple of years and he has been doing some highly questionable shit. Anyways, today I got to the new Macklemore track Hind’s Tall and I wanna tip my hat to him. I’m not a die hard Macklemore fan but I do respect his pen game and I don’t really think I’ve heard a mainstream rapper raising the Palestine issue yet. And the way he did this gives me chills. What a fucking song. The line “I want a ceasefire, fuck a response from Drake” puts shit into perspective. Much love.

Back to this tho. Since June is shaping up to be pretty eventful, I don’t mind things being a bit slower these days. I’ve been working a lot, I’ve been following music (going through Kendrick’s discography on some appreciation shit), I’ve been running a bit more extensively, reading, enjoying the weather. Oh yeah, last Sunday evening, I tried out this sauna place in the Lužánky park. Really fucking lovely place with 3 different saunas, 1 steam room and beautiful views into their little garden. Definitely gonna be back.

Yesterday, I met up with my sis and spent some time with her and the nephew in the park. Couple days prior, we had another pretty hangout with some delivery pizza, too. Anyways, the little guy has been quite fond of his bicycle which he can ride like a boss. He still has some way to go with speaking but when it comes to physical coordination, he’s definitely doing better than most of his buddies. We played some catch, got some food and wrapped the evening up at my sis’ with dinner and a movie. We watch the OG version of Pinocchio which was cool but quite confusing at points. On the way home, I stopped at my friend's work to talk some shit and that was that.

I’ve been running my 12km route the past 5 days and I’ve been really enjoying it. I’m thinking about possibly going to do some swimming later on today and in the evening, I’m probably meeting up with a friend to do our little cycling trip. Oh yeah, and I’ve finished this novel by this Czech author which is based on an interview with a North Korean defector. Great read. Hope you guys are doing well… Sending love to everybody reading. One!

Semester 16 Chapter X: Norwegian Wood

It’s that time of the week again so I’m back on this blog shit. Kinda crazy realizing how long I’ve been doing it. My fist semester in Shanghai feels like a different lifetime. But hey, there’s still couple of y’all out there checking for this so here we go. Before going any further, I’m gonna spend a minute on this Kendrick/Drake situation. Over the week, it has become nuclear. I don’t think I’ve seen anybody brutalizing anybody in rap the way Kendrick’s been doing Drake. It’s dark, it’s nuts, it’s fun, it’s an event. And Kendrick is unloading like every half an hour at this point. Again, good times to be a rap fan.

Okay, so last week… There was my dad’s trivia, there was a hangout with one of my bros but for the most part, I wasn’t being too social. Figured I need a bit of peace. Friday evening, I took my bike and went to the city planetarium to check out a program on black holes. That never gets old. It was enjoyable, the visuals were stunning, space is fascinating. Saturday afternoon, I met up with my cycling buddy and we took it to the town of Bílovice as some of people I know were opening a restaurant over there. It was a good ride there, good chat and then a great ride back. It was super dark and there’s no lights around the cycle pathway so the only sources of light were attached on our bikes. Always enjoyed that, looks like a David Lynch movie.

I’ve been running a bit more recently, too. Plus all the workouts, meditations, keeping my energy levels clean. On top of that, I finished Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. Read some of his other novels previously but this one is exceptionally good. Feels light, feels simple and smooth but cuts deep. The main character felt very relatable, it was a great read. After some time, I wrote and recorded some lyrics, too. Felt good spending some time doing that.

Okay, and that’s about it. Just checked and seems I made no pictures last week, so this time it’s gonna be just text. Hope y’all doing well. Sending some positive vibes to everybody out there. One!
